When the owners of this Wheaton home were looking for the inspiration behind their dining room design, they turned to their locale; the home is adjacent to the Prairie Path, a pedestrian forested nature trail that’s near and dear to the hearts of many Chicagoans. To incorporate the woodsy feel, the homeowners hired Douglas Coggeshall, master artist of Darien-based Coggeshall Artistry, who has developed a unique grisaille (monochromatic) mural style that he is able to complete in one day. “It is a technique I devised, and I keep the formula closely guarded,” Coggeshall says. “It was one of those ‘happy accidents’ while creating a grisaille mural, and it’s been my trademark ‘Foggy Forest’ ever since.”

The color options for the Foggy Forest style are limitless—the technique requires two similar tones of one color. The owners of this home chose a color that was subtle, yet very realistic. To further enhance the realism, tiny phosphorescent stars appear among the trees when day turns to night.
