Spring is right around the corner. Will your lawn be ready? By following these five simple steps, you can ensure your lawn will be lush and green by the time your family is ready for some outdoor fun.
1. Clear the Site
Rake up and collect any debris that has accumulated over the winter months. Removing these rocks, leaves, and sticks now will improve air flow and encourage healthier growth.
2. Test Soil
Regular soil testing will help address your lawn’s specific needs. Most turf grasses can tolerate a pH range between 6 and 7. Some varieties, like Centipede, thrive in a more acidic pH. Correct acidic soil with powdered lime and basic soils with sulfur additives. Always be sure to follow manufacturer’s directions for whichever products you choose.
3. Resist the Urge
Do not lower the height of your turf going into Spring. Trimming low too soon may cause frost damage and dead spots.
4. Apply Pre-emergents
Pre-emergent herbicides inhibit the germination of certain weed seeds and can provide blanket protection against weeds for up to 6 months.
5. Service Lawn Equipment
Get ready for mowing season! Sharpen or replace the blades on your mower now. A sharper blade produces better results and cuts down on the frequency of mowing.
If you believe your yard is in need of new sod, choose your sod company carefully. Look for locally produced sod to ensure quality and freshness. Your new turfgrass is an investment you will enjoy for years to come!
