7 Contemporary Baths and Kitchens

Modern Kitchen design with honed white Carrara marble countertop
Modern interior design emphasizes the concept of simplicity—not just in the décor of a room, but also in the entire space itself. A modern design takes a space and strips it of superfluous design elements so that what emerges is clean and practical. This style of design considers function—how a room will be used equally with how a room should look. Excited by the MA! Architecture Tour in June, we’ve gathered inspirational modern baths and kitchens for you to appreciate. Plus, we’ve included at-home bath recipes and suggestions for modern meals.

The Lineup: Chic, Clean and Captivating
Cablik Enterprises
“This empty-nester couple wanted their bathroom to have a spa-like feel—a serene oasis,” says builder Alan Cablik of Cablik Enterprises. The room’s design features are extremely dramatic, but they are also very simple. The horizontal slats of the shower’s back wall are softly lit and its glass walls don’t block the view out the window. And the “floating” teak vanity is as eye-catching as it is functional.

A Regal Retreat
PDI Kitchen, Bath & Lighting
Creating a cozy feel in a bathroom with a vaulted ceiling is no easy feat. The cathedral windows are the secret here—lending the room an airy feel with a view of the Sandy Springs forest outside. The colors in the light-hued marble floor are repeated in the gray and white paint and chrome fixture choices. Using marble for the wall treatment creates a throne-like area for the freestanding tub.

Stress-Free Sanctuary
Southland Development Services
Eric Koehler of Southland Development Services recalls the motivation behind this Peachtree Corners bathroom remodel: “This young couple desired a retreat off the master bedroom to escape the stress of a long day. The MTI freestanding tub with air jets, the walk-in shower with an Infinity Drain and the room’s heated floors were key features that accomplished that goal.”

Bring the family together in a modern space that welcomes natural light, showcases uncluttered surfaces and features simple furnishings that standout in a substantial way. The Atlanta kitchens we’ve highlighted here do that and so much more.

Rustic Meets Modern
Totally Dependable Contracting Services, LLC
Now that the kids have left, these Sandy Springs homeowners wanted to make changes to their kitchen and living areas to improve the flow of traffic and to add storage. They splurged on a Sub-Zero fridge, Bosch dishwasher, Wolf range, UltraCraft cabinets and Dacor ovens to create the kitchen of their dreams. Design elements like the reclaimed barn door, fireplace mantle and Georgia Harvest table add a rustic counterpoint to the ultra-modern fixtures.

Open and Opulent Floor Plan
Renewal Design-Build
The homeowners here started with a kitchen that was isolated from the other living areas of their house. This remodel brought the kitchen into the home’s center to create an elegant great room, perfect for entertaining. The large island, with a honed white Carrara marble countertop, allows for ample workspace and reflects light into the room. The quirky paneled glass light fixtures above it draw the eye upward, creating a spacious quality the couple was after.

Fab and Functional
Dove Studio Kitchen & Bath
“The homeowner is heavily into the culinary industry and her existing kitchen was so dysfunctional. So the pressure was on to make this a true chef’s kitchen as well as a place for her family to gather,” designer Stephanie Elder explains. “The weathered wood of the island and smoky gray tile backsplash set off the high-gloss cabinets perfectly.”

Refreshing Residential Revival
“The goal in this kitchen was to integrate the design elements into the overall space—so the appliances feel built in rather than just placed against the walls,” explains architect
Brian Bell of BLDGS. The kitchen, which is featured in the 2017 MA! Architecture Tour, includes custom steel elements, like the doors seen below, throughout the project. The design also makes excellent use of the natural light pouring in from huge unadorned windows.

STYLE IT
It’s all in the presentation, darling. Use a white square plate to display your salmon and spinach dish. Make it modern by adding a sprig of thyme atop the fish and by putting the greens in a cylinder-shaped food mold for a more refined look.

SHOW IT OFF
Instead of putting a messy pile of rice on a plate, give your guests a show. Coat a bowl with oil and pack the vegetable rice inside. Then, flip over and … voilà! Incorporate modern characteristics (clean, simple) to your meal. The peppers on top give it just the pop the dish needs.

SIMPLIFY IT
Get guests giddy with small appetizing bites of bruschetta. Serve a toasted baguette (go for garlic!) with mozzarella, basil, cherry tomatoes, and olive oil. The simplicity of the dish puts a modern twist to the tasty toast.
