A Design Duo Create a Cozy Retreat in Their Living Room
When it came time to design their personal home—a 40-year-old, custom-built manse situated on seven acres of land in Athens, Georgia—husband-and-wife owners of Metal + Petal, Jade and Graham Joyner, left no stone unturned to create a personalized respite for their family of six. The result is an enviable take on what happens when eclectic tempts traditional.
➊ A classic fireplace: “The traditional fireplace with the green marble surround is so timeless,” said Jade Joyner, Metal + Petal’s principal designer and chief creative officer. “At first, I was going to paint all of the wood, but I am so glad I left it stained.”
➋ Artisan-made basswood shelves complement custom millwork for a cozy and timeless feel.
➌ A contemporary sectional: This functional element brings a touch of modern style to the classic home. “We wanted this to be our more casual space,” said Jade. “It’s a curl-up-on-the-sofa, have-a-chat-by-the fire kind of room.”
➍ “I wanted this traditional space to feel more up-to-date, so the contemporary sectional, burl wood coffee tables and modern game chairs make it more current,”she added.
