Kitchen renovation by Mahogany Builders, Chicago, (773) 755-0055, www.mahoganybuilders.com

When buying this Wicker Park home, the new owners knew it needed renovations—especially the small kitchen with a dysfunctional layout. The owner designed an all-knew kitchen layout, and hired Chicago-based Mahogany Builders to make her design come to life. The firm reconfigured the space, replacing the entire plumbing system, enlarging one window and relocating another. Because the home is a vintage structure, leveling the floors and truing the walls proved very difficult—in fact, the conditions forced Mahogany Builders to alter the plans and rebuild a wall that was 2 inches shorter than planned. Fortunately, the cabinet design was still possible—with only minor alterations—and the final result is a kitchen that reflects the homeowners’ vision, mirroring the vintage style of the home with antique details and a timeless design.
