Area rugs serve many purposes, including protecting the floor, defining a living space and enhancing décor. Your floor should be protected with the added layer of a good rug; however, some rug-backing materials may discolor or damage hardwood floors, so it’s important to check the underside and purchase the appropriate rug pad. When defining a space, the right rug unifies furnishings and designates functional zones. Rugs seamlessly combine colors and patterns, enhancing décor with a more finished look or feel. With that covered, let’s slip in some extra tips.

Do:
Mind the size — The dimensions of your rug make all the difference. When you use a really small rug in a large space, it will look dwarfed in its surroundings.
Mix patterns — Take note of the other patterns in the room and pick a rug pattern that is obviously different in scale than that of the textiles accompanying it.
Your homework first to make sure you don’t bring home the wrong-sized rug. Measure your room and determine the closest rug size that is at least two feet shorter than the length and width of the room.

Don’t:
Go bare — Rugs absorb sound in a room, quieting down those wood, tile, brick or stone floors.
Ignore custom options — Worried about an awkward space? We can create the perfect area rug from any carpet in the showroom.
Forget the pad — A high-quality rug pad keeps the rug securely in place, protecting your floors while also providing comfort underfoot.
