Are you dreaming of the perfect kitchen with inviting entertaining space? Or what about those spa-like bath retreats offering a restful oasis from the day’s chaos? Many of us ponder the possibilities for improving those parts of our homes, but these homeowners took action, tackling a major renovation of the hardest-working areas of the house. They’ve already experienced the full arc of the undertaking—the wishful thinking, the meticulous planning, the challenging process and the excitement of the final reveal. Now, they’re sharing a bit of their journey, bravely presenting their “before” pictures and proudly showcasing the “after” that will inspire all of us to make some changes of our own.

Problem
The layout of the existing kitchen didn’t work well for this active family raising four children. Disconnected work areas and awkward appliance spacing made for an inefficient work flow. The kitchen’s traditional appearance wasn’t quite in line with the homeowner’s style, so a renovation was in order.

Solution
John and Niki Rogers gave their clients a sleek, contemporary kitchen with a fluidity that fits their lifestyle and aesthetic. From the seamless marble countertop to the built-in espresso station, this new kitchen turns form and function into modern artistry. Stainless steel shelves and toekicks integrate with the appliances and hardware, while sculptural bar stools highlight the geometry repeated throughout the space. An antique mirror tiled backsplash picks up the light of the globe fixtures and reflects the gentle, cool tones of the stained oak cabinetry.

Problem
The dark and dreary bathroom was not only outdated, but also clashed with the contemporary design of the rest of the house. The lifeless brown tile absorbed what little light came into the existing space, and the room was further challenged by a confusing series of steps leading up, down and around the bathing areas.

Solution
A clean, minimalist approach solved the myriad of problems these homeowners faced. Wide white tiling runs along the floor and walls creating a unified backdrop. The unique zero-entry shower configuration features a glass tile “wave” wall for privacy and drama. A freestanding tub now enjoys streams of natural light from a pair of newly installed picture windows. White cabinetry, light-toned granite and stainless fixtures keep the room bright.

Problem
This kitchen was trapped in a 1970s funk and waiting to be rescued. Dark wood, dated appliances and dingy tile made time in the kitchen less than harmonious. This client needed to infuse a new melody into the drab space.

Solution
After a bright, modern makeover, the kitchen sings a much happier tune. Designer Simone Feldman kept a neutral palette yet added interest with high contrast between the painted white cabinets and dark granite countertops. Beige tiles on the floor and main backsplash give continuity to the space and set the stage for a contemporary jolt from the variety of tonal glass tiles behind the stove.

This client’s unfinished basement required completion to extend the homeowner’s functional living space and to support the regular entertaining this family enjoys. Evaluating the long-term use of that basement, the homeowner decided to add a large bathroom which could easily serve guests and later transition into part of a separate in-law suite.

Clever use of the layout allows for a wide shower with bench seat and plenty of storage throughout the bathroom. Classic subway tile gets a touch of whimsy with confetti-colored bands of glass and stone tile mosaic. Luxury vinyl tile on the floor emulates the look of hardwoods with the extra durability necessary for wet areas.

Problem
These homeowners were frustrated with their unattractive, outdated kitchen and its limited space. In fact, to them, the entire area felt like an afterthought when the home was built 25 years ago. They truly love their home and wanted a kitchen that reflects that affection, as well as honors the designer touches throughout the house.

Subtle changes to the layout made a huge impact on the use of the space. The storage issues were addressed immediately with designated cookware drawers, generous pantry space featuring rollout trays and taller cabinets maximizing the room’s height. A custom curved wood stove hood and stately crown molding continue to draw the eye upward, vertically extending the space. High-end stainless appliances, exotic granite and a handmade tile finish the kitchen in gorgeous detail.

Stepping into this master bath gave this homeowner a totally ‘80s flashback. She wanted to snap out of the time warp and bring in some soft sophistication. She also longed for a bit more space and storage, cozy heated tile floors, a glamorous freestanding tub and a separate glass enclosed shower.

Solution
To enlarge the area and create a better footprint, the designer took over a wet bar from an adjoining room and reorganized the plumbing to accommodate a different layout. Once the new floor plan was established, the designer and homeowner could fully realize their mutual vision. The lighting, hardware, fixtures, tile and textiles all enhance the feel of luxury and elegance. As a final touch, artist Kass Wilson used a faux-finish painting technique on the walls to repeat the embroidered design of the fabrics selected.

Problem
The angles in this small kitchen were not at all conducive to having more than one cook in the space. The homeowner wanted to open up the space as much as possible, add more storage and improve the overall flow of traffic in the area. With no windows nearby, finding ways to bring light into the room presented yet another challenge.

Solution
Designer Becky Sue Becker’s galley layout erased those cramped corners and brought fresh opportunities to amplify storage. The new peninsula features a walnut-top waterfall edge defining an eating/entertaining zone within the functional workspace. The eclectic mix of organic materials—such as stone, wood and metal—create texture and depth in the otherwise neutral color scheme. Painted white cabinetry, light countertops, stainless appliances and industrial pendants illuminate the modernized kitchen.
