Be it a rainy, dark day or simply a constant coastal craving, we all wish we lived at the beach. For this space designed by Blessed Little Bungalow’s Amber Guyton, delivering that daily was the goal.

“My client couple wanted to create a serene yet colorful space for them to escape to,” said Guyton. “Inspired by their colorful art collection and a new piece by artist Maurice Evans, we pulled out blue, green and coral hues, and designed the bedroom with a coastal retreat in mind.”

For a room that was pretty neutral to begin with, including basic furniture, the high ceilings (our favorite part of this room) weren’t being given the dressing they deserved. Guyton started there.

“First, we added an accent wall using board and batten and painted it a rich green, Sherwin-Williams Underseas,” she said. “We updated some of the furniture to match their vintage armoire and brought in more color with the area rug, artwork and bedding. We also updated their existing fireplace giving it a freshly tiled look, elevating the entire space.”

Decorating with lots of color can be fun and transformative, but many wonder how to do it without getting tacky. Guyton says to use the 60/30/10 Rule. Sixty percent of the room should be a dominant color, 30% a secondary color or texture and the last 10% can be an accent color.

“By limiting your color palette to neutrals and this ratio, it will keep one from overdoing the color in a space.”

That being said, Guyton stands by the unexpected chemistry of colors as her favorite part of this design. “I love the teal and coral hues, while still remaining a gender-neutral, serene and elevated bedroom to retreat to.”
