The owners of this Apex home decided that after more than 20 years of enjoyment, their kitchen needed an overhaul. They wanted a contemporary feel without looking industrial. Jodi Schavone, founder of The Décor Coach, came to the rescue. The new look was achieved with clean lines and warm wood tones. New custom cherry cabinets are topped with white Ceasarstone counters from WorldGranite & StoneArt Inc. of Raleigh. Walls were kept a simple but warm Chef White color, and the custom table matches the cabinets exactly for a more monochromatic and modern look. The contemporary look was softened a bit with curves throughout the room, such as arched stainless steel cabinet hardware, a D-Bowl sink from Kohler, an arched faucet from Delta and Chrome Circle lighting from Lowes. Additionally, the original kitchen was set up so the owners had to walk around a peninsula to get to the working area, so Schavone replaced the peninsula with an island, which not only allows direct access into the kitchen, but also turns the working surface to face a beautiful view of the homeowners’ garden. The new island not only includes a built-in bookcase for cookbooks, but also has roll-out drawers in the cabinets and pullout trash and recycle bins. Removing the peninsula gave access to storage space previously not accessible. Additional smart storage solutions throughout the kitchen include pull-out spice racks, towel and cutting board holders, as well as a cooking tray cabinet in that often-forgotten space over the fridge and a wide lazy susan corner cabinet that makes every inch of this kitchen usable.
