Wondering what you should splurge on when remodeling your bathroom? Or, how to decide what you should contract out to a professional and what you can tackle yourself? Casteel Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electrical gives us the lowdown on how to receive the most return on your time and money.

Do: Plan ahead
Converting a small, dated bathroom to an open concept spa oasis takes a lot of consideration and forethought. When planning, think of ways to take advantage of wasted space and emphasize bathroom must-haves—allocate plenty of space for counter room, cabinet storage, a larger spa shower, and a separate toilet area for privacy.

Don’t: Remodel without setting a budget
Tile, toilets and plumbing fixtures can add up fast if you aren’t keeping track. Stick to your budget by prioritizing and adding up the anticipated cost of your nonnegotiables ahead of time.

Do: Splurge on shower space and fixtures
Luxurious tile showers complete with large rainfall nozzles, full-body sprayers, and wooden seats are quickly replacing old, unused bathtubs. While it may be tempting to go for cheaper plastic bathtub and shower combinations, high-quality showers can mean better utility savings, a longer product life, and a seamless design fit.

Don’t: Attempt to rework your plumbing
Amidst your bathroom revamp, remember to recognize your limits and call in a plumber for major work. Casteel suggests interviewing potential plumbers to make sure they stand by their work, have an established community presence, have a clean background check, and are licensed and trained.

Do: Think about efficiency
When having your plumbing reworked, talk with your plumber about energy and water efficiency. Rain shower heads and full-body sprayers can dramatically increase your water usage leaving you standing in cold water before long, if you aren’t careful. To combat this issue, consider upgrading your water heater or getting water saving fixtures to decrease unnecessary water output.
