Explore the possibilities with paint and wallpaper
Great design evokes an emotional response. You feel something the moment you walk into a space. Are you immersed in elegance, or is it the experience of tailored sophistication? Does it speak to your playful nature or say strictly business? The furnishings and window treatments create the function of the design. Walls, however, are usually the largest surface in a room, wrapping you with this feeling.
Wallpaper and paint treatments can both be used to create these effects, but each presents a full list of pros and cons. For example, one of the challenges of choosing wallpaper is the time it takes to find the perfect pattern in the perfect color among thousands of options. On the other hand, painting provides unlimited choices and complete control over the end result, but this can be a challenge in itself for the do-it-yourself type.
The advantage of one wall treatment over the other is its ability to achieve lasting inspiration while keeping up with current trends. In the realm of wallpaper, gone are the days of trellises of ivy and tacky florals. Today’s wallpaper patterns are more advanced than ever, offering dynamic textures, patterns and colors with easy application and removal.
In contrast, painted finishes often evoke a cringe with images of sponging, ragging and plastering. But the technique has evolved into a professional specialty, with faux finishers constantly improving and reinventing designs to keep up with new ideas, products and processes to complement ever-changing styles. Paint manufacturers have also released special formulas designed to enable homeowners to create their own finishes with real brush strokes.
With all of the options that are now available, it is easier than ever to create a design statement that is a true reflection of who you are. And that’s a great feeling.

5 Things To Consider When Selecting a Wall Pattern
1. Color Don’t be fooled into thinking that a traditional pattern only works with a traditional style. Unexpected color combinations completely transform the way a design is perceived. Focus on colors that need to be prominent and incorporate them into your walls.
2. Size and scale Choosing the correct size and spacing between each repeat is what determines if your wall is the background for the art or if it is the art. For a new twist, try using a single pattern but in different sizes and/or different colors.
3. Location and placement A single strategically placed grand motif makes a powerful focal point a room. Keep the remaining surfaces a solid color so that there is no competition with the main attraction. Randomly placing each motif of a repeat pattern adds interest. Consider overlapping for an intriguing design.
4. Price Wallpaper and decorative painting varies greatly in price. Both are dependent upon the production process and the cost of the materials. Think about what you would expect to pay for a piece of art the same size. Your walls can easily be customized to become the art.
5. Structural imperfections Walls are rarely straight and floors are rarely level. A couple of degrees off may not affect the structural integrity of a home, but, making it look right can easily challenge the most experienced paper hangers.
