Fifties to Fab: Living Room and Kitchen Redecorated on a Budget

Men laying new hardwood flooring

Robert Gordon hated the dated fifties style of his newly purchased home and wanted to do something about it. By covering the knotted pine wall paneling in the living room and kitchen with 1/4-inch sheetrock, he was able to paint over the eyesore inexpensively.

In addition to painting the living room, Robert covered the existing floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace surround with sheetrock and installed a traditional style mantle and a new granite surround to match the granite countertops in the kitchen. Coming in at just under the $1,000 budget, Robert entered the living room portion of his home makeover in our “Decorating on a Dime” Contest for the chance to win a $1,500 home improvement prize package and be featured in the February 2012 issue of Atlanta Home Improvement.

However, his improvements to the home didn’t stop there. Next, he tackled the wood-paneled kitchen, which he also covered with sheetrock and painted. Granite countertops replaced the unsightly yellow laminate and contemporary cherry-finished cabinets replaced the existing knotted pine cabinets, bringing the space into the 21st century.
