Lately, several television commercials have promoted steam mops that promise to clean hardwoods, laminate and tile floors. But did you know there is a great chance you could actually be doing more harm than good with a steam mop? Before you buy, consider these tips:
One of the major criticisms about steam mops is the excess water left behind. Water that seeps into an unfinished or worn out floor can not only puff the grain but cause the finish to warp. On laminate flooring, water can easily penetrate through the unsealed plank edges into the core. The combination of heat, acid and enzyme cleaners on a tile floor can soften the grout and cause permanent damage. Cleaning pads on some steam mops can even leave scratch marks.
The Wood Floor Covering Association (WFCA) states that most manufacturers of both laminate or hardwood flooring don’t recommend the use of steam mops on their products.
So why do steam mop manufacturers recommend their use? It’s simple, these companies want to sell their product. If you are considering using a steam mop, please read the mop’s warranty—chances are it only covers defects in the mop itself and excludes damage to your flooring.
Consult with your flooring specialists for expert advice and tips on how to keep your floor looking and feeling brand new.
