How To Landscape a Steep Yard

Terracing a steep yard can transform a completely unusable and sometimes treacherous space into a functional, brand new type of lot. The pitfalls to beware of  with a steep yard are drainage issues, erosion issues and making sure any retaining walls are built correctly. Grading and installing walls to create terrace levels are not the difficult aspects…finding someone who knows how to make sure everything beneath the surface is done properly is the extremely difficult part. Asking to see the company’s certifications or asking to see photos of previous projects are good ways to avoid a contractor that may not be qualified to install your project.

Also, when attempting to make the most of a challenging landscape, but needing to keep the cost down, consider different material options. You don’t have to do three levels of paver patios… Consider incorporating pea gravel, sod, or plantings for each level. Apply the same principal to the walls–instead of doing pricey stone walls, consider block, pressure-treated timbers, or boulder walls. Keeping an open mind and communicating your preferences to the contractor will allow them to help you maximize the budget you have. Request photo examples, purchase a 3D design, and give a budget… These things will all help you obtain the results you are looking for the best price.
