How To Make Ceilings Appear Higher Using Crown Molding
Small rooms can feel confined and sometimes uncomfortable, but certain design concepts can fool the eye and make interiors seem much more spacious than they are. To add an elongating illusion of higher ceiling to the standard 8-9’ ceilings, add additional trim piece to crown moldings at the ceiling. Use a standard crown molding (4-6” with a 1 ¼” apron) and install on the ceiling. Paint the apron and crown same color as the trim color.
If you want a more custom look and larger trim (but don’t have the budget for it) install a standard crown molding (4-6” with 1 ¼” apron) on the wall below and on the ceiling above. Paint the apron and crown the same color as the trim. To make trim appear even larger, install the apron with up to 2” gap between it and the crown molding. Paint the apron and exposed wall the same color as the trim.
