This 14-year-old Plano kitchen was due for an upgrade, and the homeowners were looking for the biggest bang for their buck. They turned to RK Remodeling, and, according to the firm’s owner Rick Ondich, much of the change would come from a simple can of paint. “The homeowners were looking for a traditional look via modern updates,” he explains. “The existing oak cabinets were stripped and painted a dark brown-black. The cabinet doors were then converted to include concealed hinges and, eventually, new hardware was added.”
The kitchen’s previous laminate tops were replaced with 3-centimeter Mirador Gold granite counters, and the sink was replaced with a composite under-mount style. The worn and dated wallpaper was removed and walls were textured with a custom skip-trowel finish. “The Sherwin-Williams ‘tea stain’ glaze provided a subtle but warm feel and depth to the wall texture,” Ondich says.
“The island was refaced with bead board and glazed with the ‘tea-stain’ finish to create a focal point in the center of the kitchen,” Ondich describes, adding, “the backsplash is 3-D stack-ivory/noche.” Under- and above-cabinet lighting was added for effect and to provide task lighting, and builder-grade moldings were replaced with an updated trim package. The project’s cost totaled approximately $18,500, not including the cost of the new appliances: a stainless-steel oven, cooktop, microwave and refrigerator.
