Pet-Friendly Mudroom Makeover

Laundry room with dog bowls

A mudroom gets an upgrade with the addition of a luxury pet spa in this custom design by Rosa Santiago Zimmerman and the team at RSZ Design + Development. The homeowners have two 250-pound Mastiffs and wanted a space with dual functionality: a laundry room and a pet station to accommodate their fur babies’ hygienic needs.

“The pet drinking and washing area was purposely designed for the dogs’ hygiene. The dogs are not bathed here, but this is a space where they can eat and drink, and have their faces washed immediately after. Drooling happens excessively around mealtimes, so this prevents messes from making it to other parts of the house,” said Zimmerman.

“The approach as with every concept that we create for our clients is to understand their needs, immerse ourselves in the manner in which the client lives and then marry all that information into a concept that is not only practical and functional, but also aesthetically pleasing so the daily tasks do not seem like a burden.”

Maple cabinets were painted for easy drool cleanup. Mastiffs’ drool dries black but won’t stain the satin surfaces of the cabinets.

➋ The Non-Slip Concrete Tile in the pet spa bleeds onto the walls for a stylish and cohesive look while maintaining the efficiency and safety of non-slip floors.

➌ The pet drinking area is connected to the home’s plumbing system, and the Perpetual Well refills itself like a toilet bowl, saving the homeowners the responsibility of changing the water after each use.

Pro tip: Poor planning will yield poor results. Do your research, create a plan, hire the right professionals, then execute.
