Q & A – What causes uneven concrete and cracks?
Most uneven and cracking concrete is caused by settlement. Settlement is due to one of three things: poorly compacted soil, erosion or decay. Prior to pouring, concrete preparation is extremely important for its longevity. Topsoil, clay and loose fill should be removed and a good base material should be installed and, most importantly, compacted. Erosion occurs when water is not properly managed around the concrete and decay oftentimes is the result of something organic under the concrete that decomposes over time.
