Just like many new homes, this Fairview residence had an empty backyard. The homeowners wanted to create an enjoyable and visually interesting landscape reminiscent of their previous home in Santa Fe, N.M. They also wanted lots of color and plants that attract wildlife. Maribeth Flowers, APLD, a certified landscape designer and owner of Flowers’ Gardens & Landscapes in Wylie, created this Southwestern-style design for them. She incorporated native and non-native adapted plants to accent hardscape materials that were chosen to give a natural feel, showcasing the underlying philosophy of how a xeriscape landscape can be interesting and beautiful. A circular pathway and steps were built from moss boulders, flagstone and decomposed granite for easy access throughout the garden. A new stone barbecue, furniture and embellishments create a cozy spot to entertain, while strategically placed flagstones and plants guide visitors from the front, through the side gate, and onto the patio. The urn fountain is the main focal point and is seen throughout the garden. Plant placement and other enhancements make the garden feel open and frame the homeonwers’ view, while large grasses create privacy by screening neighboring yards. The landscape also is low maintenance with decreased water use, thanks to water-wise plants that replace the original Bermuda sod, appropriate plant spacing based on mature size and river rock used as mulch. Caring for the perennials and ornamental grasses a few times a year are the only significant maintenance tasks for the new garden.
