After 20 years as the center of this Plano family’s home, the kitchen was in great need of an update. Working hand and hand with the team at RK Remodeling, the owners had a vision of a warm, welcoming space with an old world charm that also proved functional on a day-to-day basis. As with most remodeling projects, the transformation began with a few cans of paint. In this case, Sherwin-Williams’ “Believable Buff” in an eggshell finish and Ralph Lauren’s “Tobacco” glaze proved to be the perfect combination. The old wallpaper was taken down and replaced with richly textured walls in a Mediterranean trowel finish. The cabinets were refaced with solid maple end panels, trim moldings and doors, and the original cabinet frames were stripped down and stained a chestnut color with a semi-gloss lacquer finish. The dull laminate countertops were replaced with Giallo Portifino granite and a composite undermount sink. The backsplash was replaced with a four-by-four-inch tumbled stone using bronze inserts to offer a stunning decorative element. The dated box light was removed and replaced with recessed task lighting and an island pendant light. Under-cabinet lighting was also added to the upper cabinets for not only practical reasons, but also to create a bevy of visual effects. The tried-and-true original cooktop was replaced with an induction cook top and a new vent hood. The icing on the cake was the crown molding, completing the timeless design of this kitchen.
