What can you do to limit visible metal on a frameless glass shower enclosure?

We do see slots cut into stone or tile periodically to accept glass panels without the need for additional clamps or channels. While this is a very clean look, it can cause problems down the road. Any intrusion into your stone increases the chance that water will find its way in eventually and cause damage.
