What is The NKBA?

If you are planning to remodel or create a new kitchen or bath, then you already know that determining where to start can seem like a daunting prospect. That’s when you can turn to professional organizations like the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA).

Membership Makeup
The NKBA is a national organization with local chapters dedicated to the kitchen and bath industry. A large portion of its members are dealers who possess experience, a commitment to quality and a high degree of professionalism. Many of these members maintain showrooms with products and designs on display, allowing you to see the types of products they carry and the quality of their work. Their employees specialize in kitchens and bathrooms, and, depending on their specialty, the company can help coordinate various aspects of the design and installation for your project.

Other members of the NKBA include such organizations as multi-branch retailers, appliance dealers, endorsed college students, manufacturers and distributors of a vast array of kitchen and bathroom products and designers who specialize in kitchens and bathrooms.

Education and Certification
The NKBA offers professional development courses and certification for its members. This allows NKBA members to grow professionally and enhance their careers through the industry’s premier courses and conferences. In addition, the NKBA provides focused training and unique networking opportunities.

Professional certifications that can be obtained through the NKBA’s courses include Associate Kitchen & Bath Designer (AKBD), Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD), Certified Bath Designer (CBD) and Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD). Prior to being certified, candidates must fulfill requirements of education in the kitchen and bath design field, followed by a rigorous testing regimen. Continuing education after certification is mandatory, as well. So, when you see the letters AKBD, CKD, CBD and CMKBD after the name of a kitchen or bath designer, you know they have met and maintained the stringent criteria set by the NKBA.

End Result
Take the time to research and educate yourself about remodeling professionals before you begin any home-improvement project. This will ensure both your project’s success and a room that you will be happy to live in for years to come.
