The vibrant owners of this Lincoln Park duplex loved everything about their dazzling home in the city, except for one room: the master bath. With a 1980s-style vanity and an oversized tub that “made you feel guilty just filling it,” the vanity wall’s only focal point was yet another plain object: a large mirror. “We were approached by the homeowners in March of this year and they had a number of things on their wish list,” explains Emily Mackie, ASID, owner of Chicago-based Inspired Interiors Inc. “Ultimately, they were looking for a space that provided them with organization and harmony.”

Construction began with the lifeless vanity being replaced by cabinetry stained in a coffee-bean color and the installation of striking stained-glass mosaic tiles. “The tile and mirror assembly created a visual separation for his/her sink areas,” Mackie describes. “Vertical orientation of tiles now draws attention to the spacious ceiling height of the room, while splashes of spa-like hues create an overall relaxing palette of colors.” Texture was also introduced to the space via a soapstone pebble mosaic on the floor of the tub area. The dated bathtub was replaced with a stunning and reasonably priced vessel tub. “Money was saved and the budget was met by using existing plumbing locations, thus allowing the client to allocate funds to upgraded finishes like quartz countertops, a frameless glass shower enclosure and natural stone flooring,” Mackie says. “It was a pleasure to provide these homeowners with a space that they can now truly enjoy.”
