Alexandra Mia – 2020 Rising Stars Top 10
Alexandra Mia | Age 34
Alexandra Mia Design, LLC, Owner/Designer
Jumping from set design to interior design, Alexandra Mia of Alexandra Mia Design has an impressive career both on and off screen. She was the production designer for season 5 of Tiny Homes on HGTV and has been running her own design firm for nine years.
How did you get your start in the home industry? My junior year of college I interned at a residential design firm, my senior year I got my start in TV from an internship at Turner Broadcasting in the scenic department, which led to my first job as a set decorator for Movie and a Makeover, and Dinner and a Movie.
What did you want to do when you were a little kid growing up? I thought I would become a lawyer… haha, I still love to argue.
How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you? I think my background that combines both interior design and production design has made me a unique designer in the ways I am able to quickly grasp the goals of the client and think through the project from a lens of story (how this will improve their lives) and aesthetics. Because I have done a lot of projects that involved Tiny Homes and unique special projects, I always think of unique solutions to challenges that may not seem to have an obvious solution.
Do you have any unique hobbies or passion projects outside of work? My husband and I have been planning a shipping container home build for the last five years and it is finally coming to fruition with a groundbreaking, hopefully, early next year.
What has been the most difficult part of your career so far? Tiny House Nation Season 5. I designed 15 Tiny Homes in six months and, in addition to the design and decor in the homes, I had to come up with numerous creative story solutions per house.
