Butler’s Pantry Makeover

Whether cocktail hour, hors d’oeuvres or dinner, gathering together is all about ambiance; but ignoring one important space in this family’s home, prevented that from happening.

“The client’s goal was to integrate sleek design elements and finishes into this room—and the home as a whole—to better fit their transitional taste,” said Courtney Shearer, designer and founder of The Designery. “As we began to redesign
the kitchen it became apparent this room would need to be considered at the same level as it is visible from both the kitchen and the dining room, and while semi-functional, it was not aesthetically special at all.”

To complement the adjacent kitchen, Shearer continued the walnut finish from the kitchen island into the butler’s pantry by installing walnut cabinets and floor-to-ceiling walnut wall cladding.

“I love how this room feels like a little escape, like a jewel box. It’s warm and layered with interest,” said Shearer, who collaborated with fellow designer Ryan Foxx on this before-and-after.

The interest carries throughout the home’s main floor, in fact. With five rooms off this one tiny space, the look needed to remain uniform and sleek throughout. Shearer had the contractors remove the doors and the cabinet company created custom walnut slab doors with the same detailing as the walls. Walnut door pulls and walnut jambs in the doorways into both the kitchen and the dining room continue the cohesiveness.

“To me, it’s all about having a home that has fluidity,” Shearer added. “If you are spending money, time and effort to make over one space, then be mindful of the surrounding rooms and spaces. For most, a butler’s pantry becomes a catch-all.
But by really thinking through how you want that space to function for you and your family and making it special, even if just with a great paint color and art, you will find it only enhances the spaces around it.”
