Courtney Shearer was learning the ins and outs of the kitchen and bath industry for over a decade before striking out on her own to found her own kitchen and bath business, The Designery.

How did you get your start in the home industry? I graduated in a recession and kind of fell into the kitchen and bath industry. I was at KBIS in Chicago with my college design group when I met my first employer.

What advice would you give to those hoping to start a career in the home industry?
Network like crazy. Like a lot of industries, the home industry is small and everyone knows everyone, so having the right contacts can really help you out. Growth comes from experience, so be patient with yourself and remember with every mistake you are refining your skill set. Communication is key!

Why do you have a passion for the home industry? I really believe in the power of loving where you live. When you create a space that not only functions for you and your family, but feels like you, deep down in its bones. That’s where true luxury exists.

How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you?
I approach kitchen and bath design in a way that makes what some would consider a stressful undertaking a fun process. I understand the technical side of design, which allows me to communicate clearly and think outside the box to create one-of-a-kind spaces for my clients.

Describe a project that challenged you. What did you take away from this project?
I designed Bell Cabinetry & Designs ADAC West Showroom back in 2016/2017 and it was definitely challenging. From laying out the space to designing and selecting the finishes for each vignette, it was a huge undertaking, but one that I am so proud of!
