How To Organize Your Kitchen
We believe the kitchen is the hub of the home, used multiple times a day for cooking, eating, cleaning and everyday family life. Over time, this room can accumulate duplicate gadgets, expired food and unused appliances which leads to overflowing drawers, hard-to-close cabinets and forgotten ingredients. Organizing a kitchen can reignite a sense of calm and efficiency in this central space—which translates to the entire home. We like to say, “When everything has a home, the home has everything.” Read on for our five easy steps to reclaim your family’s favorite space.
STEPS
➊ Clean Out. Empty out kitchen items from drawers and cabinets. Group like items with like to see how many wooden spoons, unclaimed Tupperware lids and other repeat items you might have.
➋ Edit. When all items are grouped together, you can see what you have excess of and what items have lived their best life. Toss expired spices and admit you don’t need five identical spatulas. Choose your favorite few and toss (or donate) the rest.
➌ Create Categories. Start with drawers and cabinets by your dishwasher. Place plates, bowls, cups and silverware in an easy-to-reach location. There are exceptions to this rule, though, like keeping coffee mugs near the coffee station. Next, tackle large categories like pots and pans, food storage containers and kitchen prep bowls, finding homes for the items that make sense in relation to your stove and workspace area. Lastly, move on to kitchen prep items and place them in drawers where you prep most of your meals.
➍ Implement Storage Solutions. Use drawer dividers, turntables and bins. Measure the space to make sure you select the right container to fit the right spot. Use drawer dividers to separate utensils and kitchen gadgets to avoid digging through a drawer. Place smaller loose items in bins that can either be dropped into a deep drawer or stored in a cabinet. Turntables are lifesavers for storing condiments and oils. Utilize the easy-to-reach prime real estate, because if it is difficult to reach a frequently used item, it is in the wrong spot.
➎ Label It. Label all storage containers to help other members of your family easily locate and put away items. Label the drawers, if necessary, to designate certain categories.
