If my HVAC unit still requires R-22 refrigerant, is it time for an upgraded system?
A: R-22 is no longer imported to or produced in the U.S. due to an EPA ban (effective January 2020). This specific refrigerant is harmful to the ozone layer when released into the air. If your system requires R-22, you likely have an expired warranty, making repairs costly and acquiring the available R-22 difficult. The best solution to keep your home cool, reduce utility consumption and decrease your environmental impact is to update your HVAC equipment.
