It’s a Wallpaper World
Wallpaper is the big trend right now, according to interior designers Kat Nelson, founder of Kat Nelson Designs, and Selena Lewis, owner of Selena Lewis Designs. “From large florals and botanicals to textured papers that mimic wood, cork, patterned grasses and even wool, it’s ok to choose something that will make a big style statement these days,” said Nelson. “And it’s fun to look at all of the new options out there and imagine what will work—choosing one may be the hardest part!”
“Wallpaper is so in because it’s so addicting,” added Lewis, a self-proclaimed wallpaper expert. “And right now, it’s all about color! Homeowners are replacing painted accent walls with paper accent walls, and it’s not enough to have it in
just one room, or on just one wall. They’re putting it in multiple spaces throughout their home and they’re wrapping the room with it, including
the ceiling.”
Here’s what we learned: no room (or wall) is off-limits, sprawling murals make a huge style statement, frame your favorite papers for an economical alternative to covering an entire wall and check out durable (read: easy to clean) vinyl papers from big-name designers to suit high-traffic homes. Today’s papers are a modern twist on the traditional, so relish in choosing glittering metallics, big geometric patterns and intriguing textures like glass beads or Capiz shells.
Dos and Don’ts of Wallpaper Installation
Don’t Opt for peel-and-stick.
It sounds easy, but it’s not, and it doesn’t necessarily prevent wall damage. Use a paste option, instead.
Do Schedule a consult to see and touch samples before buying them from a big-box retailer. You have no idea how much is out there!
Ask your installer what adhesive they’re using. A strippable glue saves time and headaches if you change your mind and want to switch up your paper.
Think about the paper first. It’s cleaner and easier to hang wallpaper before installing new cabinets, vanities or shelving. Proper prep and planning are key to flawless paper installation that lasts a long time.
Hire a professional wallpaper hanger. They are trained to get it right, measure correctly, match the seams and cover the light switches and the outlets for the most professional application
