When Joy Dyess joined the mortgage business in 2009, she was completely green, but with her heart of gold, what came next was more than a decade of success making new homeowners’ dreams come true. Learning from a team of industry veterans, Dyess knows to think outside the box and act with compassion while striving for excellence. And whether it’s as president-elect of The Junior League of Atlanta Inc. or on the United Way of Greater Atlanta’s Advisory Board, she’s certainly helping more than just homeowners.

Why are you passionate about the home industry?
It is a gift to help others on their journey to homeownership. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve all learned how important home is — it is your refuge from the world, the place you connect with family and friends, and the place you go to recharge. Homeownership is a key to community and the foundation for your life.

What advice would you give other people starting in this industry?
Always be growing. It is vital that you keep learning and growing to stay relevant in this industry. Don’t be afraid to start in one area and then try something else. This industry is wide and deep, and you may have to try a few roles before you find ‘the one.’

What community initiative are you most proud of?
I am really proud of The Junior League of Atlanta’s JLA Serves — a coordinated day of community service for 250 people across the city over one weekend! This event brings hundreds of volunteers out into the community to serve. We tutor children, pack and distribute food, fix up senior homes, beautify nonprofits around the city through painting and landscape, and that’s just the beginning. We advocate for our neighbors in need and bring resources to those who need it.

Where do you go to unwind?
I love going to Sessions Stand near Marietta Square for coffee and to read a book, to Flora/Fauna plant shop in Cabbagetown because I’m a budding plant parent, and I will always say yes to a trip to Tuk Tuk Thai Food Loft.
