Modernizing the ’50s Ranch

Second-floor addition and whole-house remodel by Renaissance Contracting LLC, Raleigh, NC, (919) 606-0385, www.renaissancecontractingnc.com

BEFORE

Originally built in 1953, this outdated, 941-square-foot ranch-style home near the Five Points area of North Raleigh was in need of a full-scale remodel. The team at Renaissance Contracting was hired for the task, and transformed the house into a two-story home with an additional 1,174 square feet. “It is a small lot, and the only way to add space was up,” says Brandon Freeman, owner of Renaissance Contracting. The remodel involved demolishing the carport and kitchen and replacing the windows, doors, rotted siding, insulation, electrical, HVAC and plumbing. HardiePlank siding was installed with new vinyl-clad casement windows; existing wood floors were patched and refinished; the living room ceiling was raised and vaulted and the fireplace was remodeled. Two small bedrooms and a cramped bathroom were converted into a new master suite. Also included in the remodel were the addition of two new bedrooms and 1.5 baths, as well as the renovation of the laundry room, stairway and kitchen, completing the transformation of this 1950s relic into a modern, contemporary home.
