Reface or Rebuild?

“Many consumers believe their existing deck structure can be refaced with new decking, railing and lighting. But it is very difficult to determine whether or not the lumber they have is in good enough shape,” warns Miller.

Modern lumber treatments aren’t built to last more than about a decade, so if your existing deck is 10-15 years old, then it likely needs to be replaced, not resurfaced.

“Resurfacing a deck without replacing the structure is like painting over a rusty car and expecting it to look brand new for another 10 years.” Resurfacing isn’t impossible, according to Miller, but the only person who can recommend this option is a professionally licensed engineer
