Q & A – What is the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?

Beautiful kitchen with hardwood flooring and countertop

A: Solid hardwood consists of a singular piece of wood that is sensitive to moisture and must be nailed to a wooden subfloor. Engineered flooring is still real wood, it is just fashioned out of different layers to be more dimensionally stable (you can glue it down) and better at dealing with damp places like basements and bathrooms.
