Room by Room

Each room should feel inviting and warm and should reflect its purpose. The rooms in your home also should reflect your personality and style. If you feel comfortable in a home where everything flows and blends together, then choose colors that blend and furniture that complements in style and tone. On the other hand, if you love different styles and colors, dont be afraid to use different colors and furniture styles or, for example, mix modern art with traditional prints and furniture styles in the same room.

When decorating all the rooms in your home, decide which rooms you want done first, what they will be used most for, and whether they should be formal or more casual. Dont rush or make hasty decisions that will be costly later because you are not happy with the outcome. Take your time to find those special pieces for each room. Your home should tell a story about you.

Be aware that when rooms dont have doors that close them off, the feeling of the entire space needs to be harmonious. Main living areas, such as kitchens, family rooms and dining rooms should emulate a similar, coordinating style. Sharing a color palette and coordinating furnishings can help you achieve a consistent look.

Try starting with an existing or newly purchased piece of furniture or other decorative object that you feel best describes your style. Continue building in that direction until you feel your room is complete. Its easiest to tackle the big items first, and then concentrate on the finishing touches.
