Ross Vogel – 2020 Rising Stars Top 10
Ross Vogel | Age 32
TSW | Project Manager/Architect
Architect Ross Vogel has had a passion for designing homes since childhood, where he filled page after page with sketches of houses. Since completing his architecture degree at UNC Charlotte, Ross has won multiple OBIE awards for his designs and even started his own brand, Rustic Decor Guy.
Why do you have a passion for the home industry? At an early age, my brother and I would collect free real estate magazines from the grocery store and sketch out our favorite homes on copy paper. We would then host Lego house competitions from our bedrooms to see who could build the best house from the bins and bins of our Lego Library. My final Lego house still stands to this day in my parents’ home.
How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you?
Even though our final drawings are two-dimensional, I try to visualize the 3D aspect of each project and how each space will function in terms of comfort, size, volume, etc. This ultimately helps to design a space that not only meets the client’s short-term needs, but their long-term needs as well.
What do you think is the most important part of a home? Functionality is the key factor for any home and is dependent on the homeowner. The space that will be occupied most should be the true basis for any residential design project.
Do you have any unique hobbies or passion projects outside of work? I created a home decor and lifestyle blog, Rustic Decor Guy, which explores rustic-themed decorating mixed with cooking and lifestyle ideas under the theme “unlimited ideas on a limited budget.” Just like architecture, I love seeing my ideas come to life. My hope is for all my followers to find inspiration and encouragement in my posts. I am also in the process of writing a cookbook, “Food from the Farm Table.”
Anything else you would like to share with us? With a wedding a year and a half away, I am using my graphic skills to design the “Save the Date” cards and invitations. I am also designing the layout of the reception and ceremony in CAD.
