Better Tomorrow Solar, Marketing Director

Building a better tomorrow is something Sam Johnson works toward everyday as the Marketing Director for Better Tomorrow Solar. Inspired to join the sustainability industry after an internship with the Southface Institute, Sam is working toward making solar affordable and stylish.

How did you get your start in the home industry? My first experience in the home industry was at Southface Institute, a nonprofit which broadly focuses on increasing the sustainability of the built environment. I’m inspired by the breakthroughs in design and technology on the sustainability and environmental protection front, specifically as they pertain to how we design the cities we live in.

What advice would you give to those hoping to start a career in the home industry? There are all different kinds of associations that exist under the home industry umbrella. Find whatever niche within the home industry you most enjoy and get involved! Getting involved/volunteering with these organizations is the best way to build bridges and make friends with other people who are passionate about the same things as you, and will help you determine which areas of the industry you would enjoy working in the most. 

What do you think is the most important part of a home? The overall design philosophy of the builders; their use of space and light—I think a home should bring the outside in as much as possible. People are part of nature and a well-designed built environment can remind its people of this fact every day. 

Describe a project that challenged you. What did you take away from this project?
There are always growing pains when learning a new industry. For me, I’m still working to learn the ins and outs of solar regulations and how each municipality in Georgia handles them differently.
