Take A Dip and Putter Around

Pool ownership comes with perks like increased home value and an undeniable way to beat the heat. Designs like this one reveal its resort-like potential for your own backyard.
“What’s really special about this project is how we were able to transform a small space into something special and functional for our clients,” said Masha Carter, president of Cosmic Design Studio. “We managed to incorporate everything they love—pool, spa, putting green and grilling area—without making it feel cramped.”
Cosmic Design Studio intentionally positioned the pool to wrap around the back entrance of the house, creating a seamless connection between indoors and out.
The color schemes of the neighborhood helped guide the material selection. Ivory travertine works well with the colonial style of the house and its red brick accents. “For the pool, we used aqua blue pebble sheen, which not only looks beautiful but also helps capture light and create a sense of depth,” she said. They also added PebbleTec water bowls for their soothing sounds.
The different zones for entertainment, relaxation and recreation work together as one cohesive space, Carter explained. “When you’re in the spa, you can still feel connected to the conversation in the grilling area. The putting green flows naturally into the landscaping.”
Landscaping helped transform what could have been a standard backyard into a lush, inviting courtyard. “We carefully selected plants that would thrive in this environment while providing privacy and visual interest throughout the seasons,” said Carter. “The greenery helps soften the hardscape elements and creates a sense of established luxury.”
Clark Griswold would be so jealous.

• Thoughtful planning will save time and resources. Remember that size isn’t everything—even a modest space can become an extraordinary outdoor retreat.
• Don’t be afraid to mix materials, but make sure they work together to create a cohesive look.
• Think carefully about lighting from the beginning of your project. Consider both functional lighting for activities and accent lighting to highlight landscape features.
