Newlyweds Christine Christianson and Nathan Anderson purchased their Youngsville home in October 2010, and the kitchen was the first room they chose for a makeover. “The idea for the kitchen design developed organically as Nathan and I sought to make the best of the feature we could not afford to change: the cabinets!” Christianson says. “We originally hoped for a kitchen with dark cherry cabinets, but this kitchen does not get very much natural light, so we kept the light-colored cabinets and updated the kitchen in other (needed) ways.”

Bobby Schelske of RMS Remodeling in Wake Forest did the initial remodeling work, which included moving the microwave, installing a range hood, removing the pantry to relocate the refrigerator and adding recessed lighting. Lawrence Green of NC Floor Guys in Raleigh removed floor tiles and installed prefinished solid-oak flooring. Gresham Riggs of Carolina Custom Kitchen and Bath in Apex installed the Absolute Black granite countertops. Neuse Tile Service in Raleigh installed the finishing touch—the backsplash—with mesh-mounted 2-by-4-inch Turquoise and 1-by-1-inch Riverstone tiles from the Precious Gems Mosaic Collection at Best Tile. “The beautiful turquoise and earth colors in the backsplash completed our dream kitchen,” Christianson says. “The colors remind us of the lovely Caribbean waters where we spent our honeymoon this past March.”
