To kick off “30 Days & 30 Ways To Give Your Home Some Love,” we caught up with interior designer extraordinaire Kerry Howard of KMH Interiors. During our chat, Howard let us in on his top design tips to keep in mind when remodeling your space:

1) Be bold with color

“I’m over the whole gray paint scheme. It is past due for color to take front and center in our design schemes,” Howard says. Instead of focusing on neutral colors like grays, beiges, and whites, build your new dining room ensemble around a beachy blue accent piece like the one pictured below.

2) Explore unexpected color combinations

A quick way to give an old space a modern face-lift is to pair saturated colors with an unexpected eye-catching color. Howard’s favorite duo right now? Turquoise and oxblood red.

3) Show smaller areas some love

When considering which rooms to put on your remodel list, be sure to pay attention to easily forgotten everyday spaces. “Clients tend to overlook mudrooms and laundry rooms in their design plans,” Howard says. These practical spaces are seen more often than you think and clever design can make these places more efficient and useful for your daily needs.

4) Open it up and make it functional
There is no question that open floor plans are in, but remember to decorate and design your new open space for functional living. Formal dining rooms that go unused or beds that value looks over comfort won’t make you happy in the long run.
