Q: Do I have to get a building permit for a small remodeling job?
A: Permits are issued by local city governments to ensure the safety of the project. Generally, any time you have a project that costs more than $2,500, you are required to get a permit for the job. Small cosmetic projects, like painting, do not require a permit. Extensive structural changes or additions to a building, as well as electrical, mechanical and plumbing work, must be permitted. That permit has to be obtained by a licensed contractor. Check with your municipality for its specific requirements.
