Not all bold designs require new builds or complete renovations. Sometimes it’s best to work with what you already have. Some new paint, a bold print and stained glass were all it took to breathe new life into the guest bath of this historic home.
Showcasing the home’s well-preserved, historic details, both the clawfoot tub and the pedestal sink served as the foundation of the design. A fresh coat of paint turned the tub into a natural focal point while brightening up the space, and new fixtures were added to the sink to match the original brass taps of the tub and create a sense of cohesion. Meanwhile, the stained glass provides privacy while still allowing light into the space through the singular window.
Make It BOLD: The bright red tub certainly takes center stage, but the wallpaper’s botanical print takes inspiration from old Victorian prints while adding a sense of modernity for a completely unprecedented look.
Pro Tip: Reusing old fixtures is a great way to save money and keep historic charm; however, keep in mind that they can contain toxic materials, like lead or asbestos. Do your research, hire a pro if necessary and make
sure to have proper ventilation and safety equipment when working with older materials.

Pretty in Pink

Contractor: Copper Sky Design + Remodel
Location: Virginia-Highland
This stunning, blushing bathroom pulls double duty as the kid-friendly and guest bath. The remodel was part of a larger renovation to create cohesion throughout the historic home, which had recently been restored from a duplex.
The bold Moroccan print wallpaper and black vanity give the space a sense of adult sophistication, while the light color palette of pinks and neutral tones gives the kiddos what they like, softening the overall space. Exposed brass fixtures pay tribute to the home’s history, while the fully tiled walls make for easier cleaning—a must-have for any space that caters to children. Meanwhile, the statement arch that frames the shower alcove creates an inviting retreat that will leave guests feeling like royalty.
Make It BOLD: The Gothic arch is the showstopper in this design. In a world of straight edges and 90-degree corners, the smooth curved lines are both elegant and unexpected. The designer was inspired by a similar arch used throughout the home’s original construction and used it as a way to tie together the old and the new.
Pro Tip: If you want to use curved walls or unique shapes in your bathroom design, be sure to find a contractor who has experience framing unique shapes.

Double-Down on Elegance

They say marriage is all about balance and, yes, that does extend to home decor. Good news: having different styles doesn’t mean you and your partner are doomed to clash. The right design can take your tastes from contradictory to complementary.
The goal for the his-and-hers primary bathroom was to create a retreat-like space that was both highly functional and deeply personal. The simple, soft greige cabinets and frameless shower doors appeal to the husband’s preference for clean, simple lines, while aged brass and the marble mosaic floor speak to the wife’s love of European charm. Doubling up on vanities and showers makes it easy for both to keep their respective routines without stepping on each other’s toes.
Make It BOLD: Wallpaper is a great way to bring color and pattern to a space, but moisture can lead to warping and tearing over time. For something that will stick around, look for vinyl type II wallcoverings or commercial-grade products that are rated for moist environments.

A Statement in Ceramic
Designer: M. Crisler Designs
Location: CR Design Studio in Buckhead
Nothing says luxury like a shower you want to live in forever, and this mosaic masterpiece will take your breath away. The scale of the extra-large floral motif creates a sense of seclusion, while the use of smaller tiles allows for stunning levels of detail that incorporate subtle pockets of iridescent color. Golden fixtures add a touch of grandeur, while the open sides invite you to stay a while (however long that means to you).
Make It BOLD: Creative freedom is the main appeal, but there’s still an art to creating a good design. Avoid visual clutter by pairing bold colors with neutral tones. Create a seamless look by using smaller tiles on any curved sections of a design.
Pro Tip: Keep your grout looking good by sealing it once or twice a year to keep stains and mildew at bay.
